At the restaurant, students engaged in reciprical conversations and shared something unique about themselves in order to get to know our new members better. The students dined on delicous milkstakes, hamburgers and fries. Upon the return home, we were faced with an unexpcted situation as we learned that the downtown 6 train was not running. Together as a group, we problem solved and decided on an alternative route to get back to our home base. This was a very important lesson in travel training as there are often many route changes for the MTA. We now know we need to be always listening, paying attention, flexible and most importantly know who to advocate to for assistance.

Our visit to the holiday train exhibit at Grand Central station

 December 15, 2012

On Sunday, Teenz in the City visited the eleventh annual holiday train exhibit at Grand Central station. The group was reminded to use their i-phones to determine the best travel route to Grand Central. We were impressed with how familiar the group is becoming with the subway system and knew which train we should take before looking direction up on hopstop! It shows that all their hard word is paying off.
Upon arrival, we explored the Grand Central Terminal which we learned turns 100 in 2013 and we were able to enjoy this celebration! In a brand new layout built, model Metro-North and New York Central trains depart from a miniature Grand Central on their way North on a 34’ long, two-level layout. Vintage model trains from the Museum’s collection are on display joined by stunning New York Central railroad posters harkening back to Grand Central’s heyday as the nexus of long distance and commuter train travel. Afterwards, we explored the infamous food court for some delicious snacks and walked around the shopping area for some of their unique shops.

Holiday Market & French Fries for all!

 December 8, 2012

Teenz in the City had a great day together yesterday! The group engaged in a good conversation on flexibility and change of plans due to weather! All members were very flexible and decided to give the holiday market a shot and if it started raining any harder we could easily leave the market. We engaged the group in some travel training, in particular a discussion on metro cards and how to check your balance of our metro cards using the machine and headed downtown via the 6 train to arrive to Union Square. Upon arrival, the group explored the Union Square holiday market and explored many different booths including art work, scarfs, gazets, gizmos, puppets & more! Afterwards, we worked up quite an appetite and headed to lunch at Wendy's in Union Square which won the group vote. It was great to be together and enjoy in the holiday spirit :)

We were our own chefs!

December 1, 2012

Teenz in the City had an awesome outing this past Sunday! The group practiced travel training skills by reviewing how to purchase a metrocard from the metro card machine and using hopstop to determine the best travel route to our outing location of Gyu-Kaku a Korean BBQ restaurant. We were able to cook our own food at our personal grill embedded in our table! The group determined that taking the subway uptown 2 stops would be the best travel route. Upon arrival to 51st street, the teens had hopstop open on the ipones and had to follow all the steps / directions to find the restaurant. They were very resourceful and did a great job! We sat down for a delicious feast of Korean BBQ. Since our group has several students in it who are true "foodies" and members who love to cook so we thought this outing was the perfect place to dine. The teens took some time looking over the menu to decide what they wanted to order, advocating for themselves asking the waitor many questions, as this was the first time the group was having Korean food.
The group feasted on chicken, rice and grilled vegetables for our main course and ordered smores which we made right in front of us. We had a great time together and looking forward to the next outing!
