Teensgiving

November 24, 2012

Teenz in the City shared our very first annual friendgiving outing this past week. The group worked on travel training using web applications and determined that the crosstown bus would be the quickest and most cost effective way to travel to Boston Market. We reviewed metro cards and the importance of being aware of one's surroundings while traveling on public transporation. The group dined at Boston Market to feast on some delicious pre Thanksgiving foods including turkey, mashed potatoes, corn bread and vegetables.  During lunch, we spoke about what we were thankful for this year and our plans for Thanksgiving. We are looking forward to our upcoming holiday sesason outings. Please inquire within for more information on our upcoming outings.

Ellen's Stardust Diner

November 10, 2012
We had such a nice time at our outing on Saturday to Ellen's Stardust diner. The teens used google maps to locate the address of the restaurant and figure out the best travel route. Upon arrival, the teens were flexible with waiting on the line to enter the restaurant and immediately upon entering began to sing along and dance to the familiar songs being preformed. We learned that all the waiters/waitresses are aspiring actors/actresses and that all the tips recieved go towards their singing/dancing lessons. When the bill arrived, we engaged the group in a conversation regarding figuring out the bill and determining the appropriate tip and tax. This is a concept that we will continue to work on. The food was delicious and fun was had by all!!

Jekyll & Hyde Halloween Lunch

November 3, 2013
We had a terrific time at our special Halloween lunch! The teens used google maps to figure out the location in the West Village and worked on hailing their own taxi cabs. When in the taxi, each teen had the opportunity to say the address to the driver. Over lunch, the teens engaged in appropriate lunch conversation and table manners, while also taking part in the entertainment at Jekyll & Hyde. With talking statues and a butler who lurked around the table, it was the perfect Halloween outing!

Union Square Market Fall Outing

October 20, 2012
We had a wonderful time on our fall outing this past Saturday.  The teens used google maps to locate the Union Square Market to explore the pumpkins for sale, as well as all the different farm fresh vegetables and fruits.  We then made our way to a lunch at Wendy's, where the teens practiced how to pay for their own lunch.  Finally, we spent time in a local Halloween store planning out our costumes for Halloween next week!  Most importantly during this session, we went over the concept of "stranger danger."  In Union Square and traveling on Park Avenue, we encountered some local individuals who approached us.  We made sure the teens understood the practice of not speaking to strangers and the idea that there are many different types of people in New York City. Just because someone speaks to us, does not mean that we must respond back to ensure our safety is maintained!

Konichiwa!

October 13, 2012
We had a great trip to Benihana this past Saturday. We used google maps on the iphone to locate the address of Benihana. From there, we determined that a taxi was the most logical way to travel to the restaurant. We took turns in the taxi telling the taxi driver the address of Benihana and figuring out what an appropriate tip would be. At the restaurant, we practiced using chopsticks for our lunch. The group was really in awe of the chef's tricks, in particular, a volcano made out of onions and tossing shrimp tails into his hat and pocket. We encouraged the teens to engage in conversation with each other over lunch. We were impressed by how friendly and accommodating the staff of Benihana was in terms of dietary restrictions/special requests. Fun was had by all, and it was nice to have another new addition to the group!

Strike, Spare, and Pizza Party

October 6, 2012
We had a fabulous time at our outing on Saturday to Bowlmar lanes. It was great to have a new addition to our group and it felt like he had been with us from the start! The group used hopstop on our iphones to get the travel route to and from Bowlmar lanes. We decided that the 6 train was the most convenient way to get to Union Square, especially in the rain and discused with the group, the importance of reading all subway signs to make sure that you get on the correct direction "Uptown or Downtown." We also reviewed with the students how to use the metrocard machine and will continue to reinforce this skill.

Once we arrived at Bowlmar, the group paid for their own bowling shoes/lane and did a great job! Fun, strikes and laughter were had by all. Afterwards, we headed next door for a pizza dance party.

No, it's not Ear Wax!

September 29, 2012
We had a great time during Teenz in the City yesterday at Madame Tussauds wax museum in Times Square. We used the hopstop application and google maps on our phone to travel to and from the museum in Times Square. We were really impressed by everyone's ability to use this application and read the maps on google. At the exhibit, everyone was in awe of the amazing wax creations created of Bees wax and Japanese wax (not ear wax as the group learned!) and how realistic they all were

South Street Seaport Exploration

September 15, 2012
It was great to be reunited with some of our summer members this past Saturday and see all the energy the group had! We hope your teens had as much fun as we did at the south street seaport. The teens were able to work on travel training skills by utilizing the hopstop app to navigate our way downtown. In addition, the teens explored the seaport, took in the great view together and continued to build relationships with their peers. We had lunch in the food court where each teen selected a place to eat that they liked and successfully paid the cashier, while we reinforced the use of monitoring the teens' money.

Pizza and Friendships

September 1, 2012

We are pleased to let you know that Day 1 of our August summer session was a complete success! All the teens got along really well and showed an active interest in getting to know each other. We had each student complete an independence survey in order to assess everyone's goals and confidence across several areas.   We met at our meeting location and walked together as a group to our lunch destination of California Pizza Kitchen.  We engaged the teens in the importance of following directions, street signs, and having an awareness of one’s surroundings. All teens were responsible for ordering their own food and understanding the cost associated with their lunch choice.  We also began to work with the group on appropriate table conversations, manners, paying the bill, and tipping.

New York, New York! The Empire State building.

August 25, 2012
Another great day for Teenz in the City at the Empire State Building!  In order to travel to the Empire State Building, teens were able to use a smartphone/iPad to locate the street address.  The group decided that due to the proximity of the Empire State Building that walking was a viable option on this beautiful summer day.  Upon arrival, we participated in a virtual ride, which provided a tour and history of New York City. Afterwards, we traveled to the 86th floor observation deck and took in the amazing view of our city.  Despite the chaos and many tourists, everyone did an excellent job and exercised flexibility and patience, while waiting on line. We went through trivia and facts on the Empire State Building as well. While traveling to and from the Empire State Building, we practiced using Google maps and reading street signs.  This is something we will continue to focus on through the duration of our group!

Chocolate by the bald man!

August 11, 2012
We had a great time today at Max Brenner's Chocolate by the Bald Man!  The teens used smartphone applications (google and hopstop) to determine the best travel route to get to Union Square. It was determined that the 6 train heading downtown would be the best method of travel. The teens received a demonstration of the metro card machine and they each purchased a metro card. We arrived within minutes and got to sample some delicious chocolate. While it was a large menu, everyone was able to find something that they enjoyed keeping dietary restrictions and allergies in mind.  The teens continued  to work on appropriate lunch conversation, manners, ordering their food and of course, the daunting task of figuring out the bill.

Strikes, Spares and Cupcakes

August 4, 2012
We celebrated a member’s birthday at Lucky Strike Bowling!  We decided as a group that the travel route to the bowling alley was most logically a taxi.  We split up into two groups and each group was assigned a student to tell the taxi driver the address to and from Lucky Strike.  We also worked on paying the taxi driver and figured out the appropriate tip.  The teens engaged in a great game of bowling where they supported each other and cheered each other on.  The teens ordered lunch and shared birthday cupcakes with one another. In addition, as the 2012 Olympic games were on TV, the teens engaged in a meaningful discussion about the Olympics and their favorite sports and athletes.
